Mountain Biking the South Mountain Preserve

One of the best places to mountain bike in the greater Phoenix area is the South Mountain Preserve. Home to 94 mountain biking trails, the preserve covers more than 16,000 acres that span the Gila, Guadalupe, and Ma Ha Tauk mountain ranges. In addition to its designated mountain biking trails, its roadways are also popular among cyclists.

The independent trail review site AllTrails ranks South Mountain Preserve trails one through three on its list of the best mountain biking trails in the Phoenix area. One of these trails, the National Trail, also earned 4.5 out of five stars from the mountain biking authority MTB Project.

Accessible via several different roads and trails, Dobbins Lookout is the highest publicly available spot in the South Mountain Preserve. At 2,330 feet above sea level, it offers a scenic panorama of the valley below.
